Slave Lake is a thriving centre for the forestry and oil & gas industries.Visitors will find all the essentials, such as a nine-hole golf course, tennis courts, movie theater, and new shopping mall. This long, shallow lake is particularly appealing to families with small children, and to a growing number of folks who enjoy windsurfing, water-skiing, sailing, sightseeing, and trophy fishing for walleye, grayling and northern pike.
In the fall, big game hunting attracts people from all over the world. Both downhill & cross country skiing are enjoyed all through the winter months.

Slave Lake, originally known as Sawridge, was established as a fur trading and supply post in the 19th century. The settlement became an important staging point for travelers bound for the Yukon during the Klondike gold rush. Its role as a transportation centre expanded as settlers moved into the Peace Country. It finally adopted the name of Slave Lake in 1923. A major flood inundated the town in 1935 resulting in the town site moving to its present location.

The Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre Slave Lake is located at 1200 Main street, in the town of Slave Lake, a short distance from highway # 2. It is only two kilometres to the Slave Lake municipal airport. Lesser Slave Lake is approximately four kilometres away.
